The Waterfront Playhouse came through Hurricane Irma with only minor bumps and gears up for its 2017-18 season of award-winning plays/musicals. Here’s what’s in store:
TRIPLE THREAT: An Evening with Laurie Breakwell, Vicki Roush & Danny Weathers (Nov. 17-18).
The season kicks off with a concert by three of Key West’s most accomplished musical theater performers. The evening will feature numbers from the world of pop, jazz and of course, Broadway, including songs from “Hamilton,” “A Chorus Line,” “Cabaret,” “Annie,” “Hairspray” and many more. Providing musical support will be musical director and brilliant pianist, Jim Rice who has been imported from Boston, along with Joe Dallas on bass, Skipper Kripitz on percussion and Mark Rose on reeds. Friday’s performance includes gala post-show party sponsored by Royal Furniture and Elwell family.
INSPECTING CAROL by Daniel Sullivan (Dec.14 to Jan. 6).
Hilarious holiday comedy takes place behind the scenes of a struggling theatre’s annual production of A Christmas Carol. Unfortunately, things are a disaster. Tim is no longer Tiny; Scrooge insists on doing the play in Spanish (Feliz Navidad!); special effects have gone haywire and annual funding is in jeopardy. God help us everyone.
1776, THE MUSICAL: Music/ lyrics by Sherman Edwards. Book by Peter Stone (Jan. 24 to Feb. 4).
It’s the summer of 1776, and the 13 colonies yearn for independence. However, a divided Congress can’t stop bickering. Some things never change. Before “Hamilton,” there was “1776,” the Tony Award-winning Best Musical. Above, the ‘Triple Threat’ Trio Musical dramatizes struggle to throw off shackles of British tyranny and adopt Declaration of Independence. Cast 25, orchestra 8 conducted by Vincent Zito brings history to life.
HAND TO GOD by Robert Askins. (Feb. 22 to March 10).
Outrageous comedy is a twisted cross between Sesame Street and The Exorcist. Jason is an awkward teen who is part of a Christian puppet ministry run by his widowed mother in Cypress, Texas. One day his puppet takes a shocking and dangerous personality, and all hell breaks loose. One of the most produced plays in 2017, theatrical thrill ride was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Play.
AVENUE Q by Jeff Whitty (book) and Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (music/lyrics). (March 29 to April14).
Once is never enough, the hilarious musical theater phenomenon is back. Part flesh, part fur and all heart, ‘Avenue Q’ played to sold out houses last year.
THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA McBRIDE by Matthew Lopez. (May 3-26). Casey is young, he’s broke, his Elvis act has tanked, the rent is due and his wife is pregnant. What’s a dude to do? In desperation, he trades in his blue suede shoes for heels and a dress to perform his best Dolly Parton. Music-filled comedy is about finding true voice. Audiences dance in the aisles. Christopher Peterson stars as Miss Tracey Mills, Casey’s drag mentor.
