She’s coming and she’s as hungry as ever. Audrey II, that infamous, maneating plant, makes her Key West reappearance on Thursday, Feb. 26, when the Waterfront Playhouse opens “Little Shop of Horrors.” Currently running on Broadway, the musical will be directed by Danny Weathers and star several Key West performers: Bruce Moore, Marjorie PaulShook, Bill Wheeler and Tom Luna. They are joined by a female trio consisting of Zoe HawkinsWells, Nulita Frias and Beth Mara. “Little Shop of Horrors,” with 2,209 performances in five years, is one of the longestrunning OffBroadway shows of all time. An affectionate sendup of the scifi movies of the late 1950s, it features a classic, awardwinning score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.”Little Shop of Horrors” tells the story of Seymour, a nerdy floral assistant who works in a skid row florist’s shop. His recent horticultural find has suddenly transformed the shop into a success. He has named his botanical discovery after his beautiful but ditzy coworker, Audrey. However, Audrey II his exotic bloom has special requirements beyond the usual water and light. The plant offers Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its evergrowing appetite for fresh blood. Seymour must also endure his overbearing boss, Mr. Mushnik and has a “breathtaking” encounter with Audrey’s sadistic boyfriend, Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. Moving the action along is a sassy girlgroup trio that act as a Greek chorus. Danny Weathers is the artistic director for the Waterfront Playhouse and has directed and acted on all of the Key West stages. He recently appeared in “The Mystery of Irma Vep” with Tom Luna. Musical Director, Jono Mainelli has accompanied many of the musical theatre’s stars, including Patti Lupone, Celeste Holm, Liliane Montevecchi, Jackie Hoffman, Charles Busch and Bruce Villanch. He’s also played keyboards for Broadway’s “Beauty and the Beast” and the national tour of “Grease.” The band will be completed by Skipper Kripitz on percussion and Joe Dallas on bass.The voice of Audrey II will be sung by Moose Boles while the plant will be operated by Roger Harmon. Musical direction is by visiting guest artist, Jono Mainelli, who was the musical director for last year’s hit, “Howard Crabtree’s WhoopDeeDoo.” Choreography will be created by Zoe HawkinsWells and the scenic and lighting design will be by Terry Tucker. The 1960s’ appropriate costumes will be designed by Sushi. There will be an opening night gala party for “Little Shop” on Feb. 26. It will be hosted by Giorgio and Amy CulverAversa upstairs at Mangoes restaurant and will feature elaborate hors d’oeuvres, an extensive dessert bar and complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks. Two Old Town Trolleys will be transporting audience members immediately after the performance to Mangoes and will return them back to the theatre after the party. Tickets are $50 and include the opening night performance and the party.
