The Waterfront Playhouse proudly opens the 2011/12 season with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play “August: Osage County” by Tracy Letts. This epic masterpiece will once again raise the bar for the Waterfront, which was named The Best Professional Theater in Florida by Florida Monthly Magazine for the second consecutive year.
“August: Osage County” is one of the most lauded plays of the new millennium, running on Broadway for over two years and winning every major theater award available. The New York Times raved, “ ‘August’ is flat-out, no asterisks and without qualifications the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years.”
“August” will have two low-priced preview performances on December 20th and the 21st. Opening night is Thursday, December 22nd (running to Jan. 14th) and will include a catered post-performance reception sponsored by Bunnie Smith and held in the sculpture garden in front of the Playhouse. Please note that all curtain times are 7:30. Tickets are available for all performances, including the preview performances at www.waterfrontplayhouse.org. The production is sponsored by KEY TV and season sponsors are Wodu Media, Digital Island Media and ATT: The Real Yellow Pages.
“August: Osage County” is the story of the Westons, three generations of an extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead when the patriarch disappears. What ensues is one bitch of a family reunion that is hilarious, shocking and riveting. Simply put, “August” is an unforgettably powerful work that will have you on the edge of your seat. Christine Dolen of the Miami Herald raved “This magnificent play manages to be well-made and utterly contemporary. Not to mention hugely entertaining.”
Directed by artistic director, Danny Weathers, the cast for “August” may be one of the finest ensembles ever gathered on a Key West stage. The cast of 13 includes John Wells (Beverly), Joy Hawkins (Violet), George diBraud (Barbara), Bob Bowersox (Bill), Jessica Miano Kruel (Jean), Chris Stone (Mattie Fae), Tom Murtha (Charlie), Kyle Caskey (Little Charles), George Murphy (Steve), Joe McMurray (Deon) and new to the Waterfront stage are Stephanie Yosen (Ivy), Nicole Nurenberg (Karen) and Shakti Assouline (Johnna). Michael Boyer creates the rambling Oklahoma house, Carmen Rodriguez is the costume designer, David Bird will create the lighting and Trish Manley is the stage manager.
