The Waterfront Playhouse will conclude its 75th season with “Me and Jezebel” starring Christopher Peterson as Bette Davis and Carolyn Cooper as the playwright Elizabeth Fuller.
“Me and Jezebel” is the true-life account of how Davis came to Fuller’s home to stay for one night, but ended up staying more than a month. The New York Post said, “The story is delightful, the writing is entertaining and what comes out of Bette’s mouth is priceless.”
“Me and Jezebel” opens April 30 with a low-priced preview performance on April 29. All performances are at 8 p.m. An opening-night party is sponsored by Kevin Melloncamp and Scott Mason. The production is sponsored by La-Te-Da.
Cameron Murray directs the tale of how Davis takes over the lives of Fuller, her husband and young son. When Davis comes to the Fuller house one evening for dinner, she asks if she might impose for “a night or two” because a hotel strike has displaced her from her New York home.
Fuller agrees, and Davis quickly inserts herself into their lives. Davis doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind on child-rearing, critiques of Fuller’s cooking, spiritualism, other celebrities and of course, Joan Crawford.
Things reach a crisis when the family’s young son begins imitating Davis’ voice, her smoking and, worse, her language.
Peterson is a master of impersonations. In his show “Eyecons” at La-Te-Da, he plays a vast array of divas, from Marilyn Monroe to Joan Rivers. Cooper has starred at the Waterfront in “Noises Off ” and “Spamalot.”
Michael Boyer will create the setting of Fuller’s home. Lighting design is by David Bird, costumes and props are by Carmen Rodriguez and Annie Miners acts as stage manager.
Tickets are $40. Call 305-294-5015.
