The Waterfront Playhouse closes its season with the musical hit “Forever Plaid” by Stuart Ross. This deliciously tuneful evening is a tribute to the “guy groups” that were popular in the 1950s when male quartets would melt hearts with their close harmonies and engaging personalities.

“Forever Plaid” begins on a stormy night in the early 1960s, when four eager singers known as The Plaids meet their untimely ends in a cherry red, 1954 Mercury on the way to their first big gig. Now in 2017, this quartet of comic crooners gets one last chance to return from the afterlife to do the show they never got to perform. The four lads deliver comic patter and angelic voices in a super-keen show that will have audiences rolling in the aisles when they’re not humming along to the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s.

Some of the songs on their roster are such hits as: “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “Gotta Be This or That,” “Moments to Remember,” “Crazy ‘Bout Ya, Baby,” “No, Not Much,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Chain Gang,” “Perfidia,” “Cry,” “Heart and Soul,” “Lady of Spain,” “Scotland the Brave,” “Shangri- La,” “Rags to Riches” and “Love is a Many- Splendored Thing”.

“Forever Plaid” is one of the most popular titles in the musical theater canon, having been performed all over the world, and was a smash hit when it was done previously in 1997 at the Waterfront. Artistic director Danny Weathers felt it was time to bring back the Plaids in all their goofy glory.

Cameron Murray, the original director from 1997, has returned with a new group of Plaids, consisting of Marc Crow, Matty Kennedy, J. B. McLendon and Jeremy Zoma. Michael Fauss is the musical director and is on keyboards.

Michael Boyer creates the airport hanger the Plaids have returned to for their heavenly performance. John Jaworski is the lighting designer, Leigh Hooten is in charge of costume design, Ben Pegg is the sound designer and J. B. McLendon is the props master, with Trish Manley acting as stage manager.

Opening night is Thursday, May 11 with a reception following the production, and the show runs through May 27. All shows begin at 8 p.m.
