The Waterfront Playhouse proudly announces the 2013/14 season, marking 74 years of bringing entertainment to the Florida Keys. The line-up includes award-winning Broadway hits, star turns and a musical theater premiere.
LEADING LADIES by Ken Ludwig, Dec. 19 – Jan. 11.
From the author of Lend Me A Tenor, this rollicking comedy is about two down-on-their-luck actors who decide to impersonate the long-lost nieces of a wealthy dowager in the hopes of claiming a sizeable inheritance. Play includes romantic entanglements, mistaken identities and hilarious drag ensue. It stars Justin Ahearn, Brandon Beach, David Black, Billy Cartledge, Carolyn Cooper, Robin Deck, Elena Devers and Matthew Hollis Hulsey.
OTHER DESERT CITIES by Jon Robin Baitz, January 30 through February 15.
This sizzling comedy/ drama is one of the most celebrated plays in recent Broadway history. The Wyeths have wealth, fame, and a political legacy. When their daughter returns home for a visit, she reveals that she’s written an explosive tell-all memoir, which threatens to destroy everything her parents have built. The New York Times called it “One of the best new plays of the decade.” It stars Michael Aaglan, George diBraud, Mary Falconer, Tom Murtha and Chris Stone.
XANADU, book by Douglas Carter Beane. Music/lyrics by Jeff Lynn and John Farrar, March 6 – 29.
Xanadu is the roller-skating musical that joyously riffs on the campy 1980’s film starring Olivia Newton-John. A beautiful muse descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach and inspires a struggling artist to create his biggest dream … the first ROLLER DISCO! It stars Tom Luna, Vicki Roush, Laurie Breakwell, Rhett Kalman, Chris Tanner, Stephanie Sander, Jessica Miano Kruel and newcomers Kara Krichman and Brian Hall.
SOUVENIR by Stephen Temperley, runs April 10 – 19.
Winner of a Drama Desk Award for Best Play, Souvenir is the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a wealthy heiress who is convinced she’s an operatic diva. Unfortunately, she can’t sing a note. She hires an accompanist and together they plan a series of public concerts, much to Cosme’s misgivings. Souvenir is touching and wickedly funny. It stars Gayla Morgan and Charles Lindberg.
A DOG STORY by book by Eric Weinberger/music/lyrics by Gayla D. Morgan, runs May 5 – 24.
This premiere presentation is the musical tail, uh, tale, of Roland, a young lawyer who adopts a puppy in order to meet women. Unfortunately, he’s pretty much inept with the ladies. However, his world is turned upside down when Cupid (the new pup) comes into his life. Eventually he finds a friendship like no other. It stars Trey Forsyth, Kristen Michelle, David Perlman and Stephanie Sander. The production sponsor is The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and the opening night party sponsor is Diane May
