The Waterfront Playhouse has an outstanding lineup of award-winning plays and musicals for their 2015/16 season – many of them recently on Broadway. Managing Artistic Director, Danny Weathers says, “I think this is the most exciting season lineup we’ve ever had. The plays are fresh, provocative and ambitious. The response from the community has been very positive. We’ll have over 50 actors appearing on our stage, including many new faces. And each show will highlight the extraordinary talents of our scenic designer, Michael Boyer.”
Here’s what’s in store:
CASA VALENTINA by Harvey Fierstein (12/17 to 1/9. Previews 12/15 & 16). From the writer of Kinky Boots, La Cage aux Folles and Newsies, this Tony-nominated Best Play was just on Broadway last year. Based on true life events, Casa is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of a group of heterosexual men in 1962 who escaped the summer heat and stifling conformity of their lives to visit a bungalow colony in the Catskills to indulge in their favorite pastime – dressing and acting as women. The New York Times called the play, “Funny and provocative. Genuinely arresting!” Sponsored by WLRN.
MOTHERS AND SONS by Terrence McNally. (1/28 to 2/13. Previews: 1/26 & 27). From four-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally (and part-time Key West resident), Mothers and Sons is a powerful and funny portrayal of a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son’s partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. This timely exploration of the changing definition of ‘family’ was nominated for a 2014 Best Play Tony Award. The Chicago Tribune raved, “Eloquent, exceptionally timely and intensely resonant.” Sponsored by KEY TV.
THE PRODUCERS. Book by Mel Brooks & Thomas Meehan. Music & lyrics by Mel Brooks. (3/3 to 3/26. Previews 3/1 & 2.) Based on Mel Brooks’ classic film, The Producers won more Tony Awards than any show in Broadway history (12), including Best Musical. It’s the hilarious tale of Broadway producer Max Bialystock, who recruits timid accountant Leo Bloom to help him pull off Broadway’s greatest scam – producing the worst show ever and running away with millions. But they soon learn that show business can kick you in the teeth. Sponsors are Preferred Properties and Conch Color.
ENCHANTED APRIL by Matthew Barber, based on the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. (4/14 to 4/30. Preview 4/13.) Lotty and Rose are London housewives who yearn for enchantment in their dreary lives. Impulsively, Lotty answers an ad to rent an Italian villa. And so their adventure begins. Recruiting two other women, they all rediscover themselves among the wine, wisteria blossoms and the Mediterranean sunshine. Nominated for a Best Play Tony, the LA Times gushed, ”Enchanted April is as good as they come: a lush, thoroughly refreshing theatrical holiday. A magical triumph.” Sponsor is The Keynoter.
DIE MOMMIE, DIE! by Charles Busch. (5/12 to 5/28. Preview 5/11). This outrageous comedy from Charles Busch evokes the movie thrillers from the early 60’s that featured cinematic icons like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner. Randy Roberts stars as a faded pop singer who tries to escape her corrosive marriage and find happiness with a hot younger lover. Bad acid trips, a resentful daughter, a weird son and a poison suppository, all play a part in this hilarious play. Variety calls Die Mommie Die!“A real doozy.” Sponsor is LaTeDa.
DOUBLE TROUBLE (Feb. 6) is a one night only concert starring Vicki Roush and Laurie Breakwell, two divas who are guaranteed to rattle the rafters of the historic San Carlos Institute. A gala party will follow the concert. Sponsored by KONK Life.
