Costume Assistant

Working in a theater has long been one of Ruth’s dreams, and when she discovered that she could  be part of WFPH productions by volunteering to help create sets and as an usher, that sold her on Key West as the place to live. Ruth and her husband Franz have been here volunteering since the 2000/2001 season. Ruth has been a volunteer house manager, an usher, a seamstress for the sets, costume designer (The Bible…), seamstress assisting costume designers — she can create it  or make it fit. She thanks Danny, Mike, Leigh and Carmen for all the wonderful, fun opportunities to create unusual items. She loves it when an actor  (thank you, JB McLendon and Mark Crowe) ask to keep the garment she created.

As a member of the box office staff, Ruth can assist you in Spanish if you wish. She thinks her job is fun and she enjoys seeing the sales side, too.  Ruth earned an A.B. from Brown University in Hispanic language and literature and an M.A.T. From Emory University in Spanish Education. She also studied the poetry of Pablo Neruda at the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile, on a Fulbright grant. She taught Spanish in public schools in New Jersey and Massachusetts and especially liked both first year and advanced classes.  When she needed a break from that, she took courses at The School for Fashion Design, Boston, where she learned a lot of the skills she now uses to help create the alternate worlds which WFPH produces.  She has also volunteered in the same capacities on Cape Cod at Harwich Junior Theater and Barnstable High School Drama Club while her granddaughter Kim was learning to act.
